What is coaching?

Coaching is a dynamic, interactive relationship between coach and client, driven by topics chosen by the client. Through listening, questioning, brainstorming and encouragement, the coach supports the client to make choices. Together, they debrief client results and rework strategies until the client achieves her/his intent.

Coaching provides short-term results and long term, sustainable change.

Who uses coaches?

People who employ coaches want to create change in themselves — either personally or professionally.

People who employ coaches want a sounding board — someone who will listen to them and help them look at issues from all sides.

People who employ coaches want some structure and process that will lead toward the change they want to make.

What does an effective coach actually do?

An effective coach provides the process framework to achieve long-lasting results, pacing the work according to the client and challenging the client as necessary.

An effective coach takes time to fully understand the goal of the client.

An effective coach develops a strategy for achieving that goal through a variety of tools, all supporting client development of self-knowledge.

An effective coach develops clients’ skills so that the clients can integrate their learning and become capable of sustaining the changes they want in their lives.

Coaching versus therapy: What’s the difference?

There are not major differences between modern therapy and personal coaching. Both professionals can be working with adults who are working through a difficult situation. Both disciplines focus on helping people make changes and accomplish goals that really matter to them. They are different ways of working; each with its own special value.

If coaching and counselling are so similar, why not use the same professional for both?

Counsellors and coaches each have their own very specialized training. That training focuses on skills development and subject matter expertise to work with people at different levels; see previous question/answer. While the interaction with the client is very similar — the background knowledge being applied is very different.

How many sessions will I need?

Typically, the coaching relationship lasts approximately three months, with two meetings per month, on average. Progress, of course, depends upon the time the client is willing to spend between coaching sessions to work through the agreed coaching assignments.

How do you ensure confidentiality?

The topic of confidentiality is discussed in the first coaching session. Coaching notes are taken to support the follow up planning conducted by the coach. Those notes are held in confidence by the coach and handled as agreed with the client in the first coaching session. It is our practice to hold all client information in strictest confidence.
