Parents often wonder why their children are doing more poorly at school than they had expected. A typical observation is that the child does not appear to be living up to his or her potential. One reason for this unexpected outcome may be that the child is experiencing a learning disorder. Such a disorder may be manifested by significant difficulties in the acquisition and use of listening, speaking, reading, writing, reasoning or mathematical abilities, as well as difficulties with attention, concentration and organization. Psychoeducational assessments are designed to clarify the nature of these difficulties. Information is gathered from the childs parents, teachers and school records, and the childs learning abilities are examined using both standardized and diagnostic testing procedures. This information is then compiled into a written report that profiles the childs learning strengths and weaknesses. This report will also include a number of recommendations for both parents and teachers to help the child improve his or her learning skills. Psychoeducational assessments are also available for adults who wish to understand their learning style and/or obstacles and difficulties limiting their learning or coping abilities.
